DIY Lash Lift
The Trend
Social Media users inform other users about their life, news updates, funny memes and much more. Being someone who loves to watch eyelash videos whether it be lash extensions or lash lifts, I have encountered one of the latest and most dangerous trends in this industry, the do it yourself lash lift.
What is a lash lift?
A lash lift is a non-invasive procedure where the natural eyelashes are placed into a set position resulting in a semi-permanent curl that lasts anywhere between 4-6 weeks. The technique required to safely apply the treatment products and have the best results is the technique taught in certification courses to professionally trained technicians.
What is so dangerous?
It comes down to the chemicals in the products. As a trained professional I know exactly what to do and what to recommend to my clients for resolving any situation. For anyone who is performing this procedure without the proper certification chances are they are unaware of the risks and what can go wrong as a result of this procedure.
When a lash lift goes wrong it can most commonly result in the permanent loss of natural eyelashes and jeopardize an individual’s eyesight.
The main ingredient used in lash lift products is ammonium thioglycolate. This chemical is used for hair perms and hair removal as it changes the structure of the disulfide bonds which are found in the cortex of the hair. Exposing the eyes to a powerful chemical such as this can result in permanent eyelash loss and burnt eyelids. Following this, there is the risk of contact dermatitis, which can lead to eye sensitivity resulting in allergic reactions to commonly used products such as mascara, eye shadow, eyeliner and skin care creams. If these chemicals enter the eye they may burn the cornea (surface of the eye), painfully resulting in ulceration and scar tissue potentially jeopardizing an individual’s eyesight.
Being a trained professional in this industry I cannot emphasize enough that it is absolutely imperative that only those who have taken the proper training should perform this procedure as there are serious potential hazards. With this being said, consider your safety and the potential consequences and DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PERFORM A LASH LIFT ON YOURSELF.
