Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is based on the usage of aromatic materials, including essential oils, and other aroma compounds, with claims for improving psychological or physical well-being.

Have you seen the bottles of essential oils that contain labels or titles of ‘calming’ or ‘relax’ scents? Taking in the scent of a candle or essential oil from a diffuser can help an individual achieve an improved psychological or physical state. However, with all things there is a consequence and candles and diffusers aren’t healthy for us when the proper safety precautions aren’t taken.

Diffuser Safety

When inhaled, the scent molecules in essential oils travel from the olfactory nerves directly to the brain and impact the amygdala, the emotional center of the brain. This is how the essential oils work when affecting the way someone feels. It is highly suggested to only use a diffuser in a well ventilated room due to reports of respiratory symptoms. These symptoms occur more commonly in individuals who have asthma as airborne irritants can trigger bronchospasms.

Candle Safety

As my clients may know, I have quite the candle obsession! Taking in the scent of a good smelling candle helps myself and my clients relax in the duration of the appointment. Luckily, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) voted to ban the sale and manufacture of candles with lead wicks as with lead wicks many people encountered lead poisoning through inhalation. Although modern candles aren’t allowed to contain lead wicks, there is still smoke being emitted into the air from our wicks. This means it is important to open a window or ventilate the room while you have the candle burning as we know smoke inhalation is not good for our health. In my studio I always have my window open, a fan running along with my Glamcor Flow, and have the built in house fan running as well to eliminate the smoke being emitted into the air.

Having a candle or diffuser is a good way to freshen up the scent of the room and add an aromatherapy session to your appointment! It is important that we are informed about the consequences that result from not taking the proper candle or diffuser precautions since above all our priority is our client’s safety!
